Sources and References

If you’re looking for a list of books to read and enjoy, you’re probably better off checking the show’s recommended books list. This “Sources and Reference” page is likely overkill for that but could be helpful for anyone else doing their own research.

This page contains a mostly complete list of all sources used to create the podcast. I say “mostly” because early in the show I had lower standards for keeping detailed lists of all of my sources. I still sought out high quality sources, I just didn’t bother writing down what I was reading and for what purposes. Around the start of the shuttle program I started taking much more detailed notes.

Due to the massive number of sources, the scattershot nature of my old notes, and my lifelong habit of procrastination, please consider this page to be a never-ending work in progress. If you have any questions or are seeking sources for a particular topic, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

    • Author: Ben Evans
    • Publication Date: 2 April 2010
    • ISBN: 9780387790947
    • Note: I’m not sure how I used this source. My notes say “Google Books preview” which means I probably just quickly double checked something. Since this happened right before the Gemini X episode, I’m guessing I used it for that.
  • Failure Is Not an Option: Mission Control from Mercury to Apollo 13 and Beyond
    • Author: Gene Kranz
    • Publication Date: 2009
    • ISBN: 9781439148815
    • Note: Kranz’s book touches on the entire space program up through the early shuttle flights. I didn’t make a record of which episodes it directly influenced but I read it right before the Mission Control episode, so I’m including it there and, of course, on Apollo 13.
  • Falling to Earth: An Apollo 15 Astronaut’s Journey to the Moon

  • Into the Black: The Extraordinary Untold Story of the First Flight of the Space Shuttle Columbia and the Astronauts Who Flew Her
    • Author: Rowland White
    • Publication Date: 19 April 2019

  • Light this Candle: The Life and Times of Alan Shepard
    • Author: Neal Thompson
    • Publication Date: 2004
    • ISBN: 978-1400081226
    • Note: I read this book years before starting the podcast and thoroughly enjoyed it. I didn’t actually use it as a real source for the podcast but it helped me learn the greater context, which let me search the sources for stories I knew I wanted to tell. Examples include the trouble with LM docking and landing radar.
  • Lost Moon: The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13
    • Authors: Jim Lovell, Jeffrey Kluger
    • Publication Date: 1994
    • ISBN: 9780395670293
    • Note: Later editions of this book were published under the title ‘Apollo 13’
    • Note: I read this as a kid, shortly after it was published, and it was surely a contributing factor to my early fascination with human spaceflight. It’s a great book that I recommend all fans of spaceflight read.

  • Space Shuttle: Developing an Icon - 1972-2013
    • Author: Dennis R. Jenkins
    • ISBN: 978-1-5800-7249-6
    • Note: Jenkins’ book seems like an excellent source for the development of the shuttle, but its coverage of missions is largely just brief summaries of official mission reports.
  • Space Shuttle: The First 20 Years – The Astronauts’ Experiences in Their Own Words
    • Author: Tony Reichhardt (editor)
    • Publisher: Smithsonian
    • ISBN: 978-0789484253
    • Note: Lots of great interviews in this book.
  • Space Year 1991: The Complete Record of the Year’s Space Events

    • Author: Frank O’Brien
    • Publication Date: 2010
    • ISBN: 9781441908773
    • Note: Great insight into the actual operation of the Apollo Guidance Computer. It was especially helpful in the “How to Land on the Moon” episode.
  • The Challenger Launch Decision: Risky Technology, Culture, and Deviance at NASA
    • Author: Diane Vaughan
    • Publisher: University of Chicago Press
    • ISBN: 9780226851761
    • Note: This book wasn’t used as a direct source when writing the STS-51L episodes. I read it years ago and it shaped my understanding of the accident, so I thought it would make sense to include it as an influence.
  • The Edge of Space
    • Author: Milt Thompson
    • Publication Date: 6 August 2016
    • ISBN: 978-1588343864
  • The History of Manned Space Flight
    • Author: David Baker
    • Publication Date: 1981
    • ISBN: 9780517543771
    • Note: It has recently become clear that Baker has been less than forthright about aspects of his own personal history. From what I can tell, that does not extend to this book, which still seems to be reliable. That said, I would recommend researching Baker before deciding to read this book. In any case, I referred to it frequently up through the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project.
